Why You Should Never Skip the Sitter Session!

As an Atlanta newborn and family photographer, I’ve noticed that most parents focus on newborn and first year sessions. However I believe you should capture the full story of your baby’s first year. This is why I believe you should never skip the sitter session! When families schedule newborn, sitter, and first year sessions, they can fully document the big stages of that first year of life that is so sweet and fleeting.

What is a Sitter Session?

A sitter session takes place around 6-9 months old. This session is more dependent on your child’s developmental stage than the exact age. It’s best to schedule this session around the time your baby has the ability to sit up independently. This session can be totally focused on just your baby. You can also get in the frame yourself or add in some shots with your other children.

New Poses and Expressions

One of these reasons the sitter session is so sweet is due to all the new milestones your baby has reached! Of course the most obvious is that he or she can now sit up unassisted. This opens up a whole new world for babies. They can see and grab toys, play with their toes, and look up to see the world from a new vantage point. This is often the time that babies really start interacting with the people around them. These new experiences bring about new expressions and ways to interact with the world. It’s so much fun to capture all these new discoveries.

Opportunity for Sibling Photos

All of my sessions are custom to each client’s needs. Sitter sessions can focus on only your baby. However sometimes parents choose to be in some shots. Another option is to include siblings. For this session we included big sister for a few shots. The bond between siblings is such a huge part of your baby’s life, so why not document that? We also took some time to get a few updated portraits of only her big sister. This gives mom a great opportunity to have matching portraits of her girls to frame for the walls.
